Besides residential areas, we also have a wealth of experience removing bats from commercial properties! We begin by investigating the area for possible bat entrances, covering holes even as small as 1/4 of an inch. What Is A Bat Maternity Colony?

Bats typically live and roost in large groups called colonies. They take up residence in warm dark places that can provide adequate protection. Bats love to roost in old abandoned mines, gaps in rocks and even buildings.

Bats do hibernate up to six months out of the year, typically in the winter time. They huddle close together as they sleep for up to six months out of the year. It helps keep them warm. 

Bats will mate in the summer when the time is right. In fact, they have a summer maternity season which typically begins as early as the middle of April and runs through August. Female bats undergo changes during the summer maternity season.

After Mating

Since bats live in groups, they are largely dependent on one another. The females all get pregnant around the same time and they will break away from their original group to form a maternity colony. A bat maternity colony usually consists of about forty pregnant female bats. 

This entire maternity colony will instinctively relocate in search of a warm safe place to give birth to their young. Incredibly, the entire colony will all give birth at about the same time. They continue to stay close together to keep warm and protect their young.

Bats are mammals and they give birth to a single pup at a time. The pups will nurse from their mother in the beginning of their vulnerable development. It will be months before they are able to fly. By the end of the summer maternity season, the size of the bat maternity colony doubles in size. 

Babies

Bats are instinctively protective and attentive mothers. They stay with their young relentlessly in the beginning. This is to feed the constant need for food and warmth. As the babies grow, the mother will begin leaving the roost at night in search of food. The babies can't fly, so they stay behind until the mother returns. 

Bats are an important part of our delicate ecosystem. Therefore, they are protected by law. It is illegal to specifically remove a maternity colony or place an exclusion device that separates the mothers from their young. It is an offense that is punishable by law. 

By the end of the summer maternity season in August, the pups will be ready to fly. Eventually, the entire colony will relocate together. Homeowners must tolerate the presence of a summer maternity colony until they decide to do so. Only then, can the extensive clean up and repair process begin for the homeowner.
